Agriculture Reality In Iraq Could Deteroriate in a

Turkey and Iran, considered the source countries for much of the water flowing to downstream countries, are engaged in an extensive program of dam construction that is causing a shortage of water and increased salinity. Syria is also planning to divert water from the Tigris River to irrigate 200,000 hectares inside its territory, a measure which would further aggravate the water shortage in Iraq. The result is growing desertification, the risk of serious deterioration of the agricultural sector in Iraq and the demise of food security in an historically rich agricultural country.
