Spain Asks Iran to Overturn Woman’s Death Sentence
MADRID – Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos took the opportunity of a meeting on Monday with his Iranian counterpart to urge that Tehran set aside the death sentence imposed on a woman convicted of adultery in Iran.
Moratinos reiterated to Manouchehr Mottaki the opposition of the European Union and Spain to applying the death penalty in the woman’s case and asked of the Iranian diplomat that the planned executions that have aroused the concern of the international community be cancelled, according to an announcement by the Spanish Foreign Ministry.
After a global uproar, the Iranian government announced that Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, a 43-year-old mother of two, would not be stoned to death, but some fear she will be hanged instead.
