Drowning in Clothes
As new clothes purchases increase so does the output of used clothing. In the U.S., we can’t begin to absorb the huge tide of discarded textiles and garments. Today, we bury or incinerate most of it, recycle a small amount domestically, and sell the rest overseas, where there is a continuing demand. When natural disasters strike and relief organizations like the Red Cross request aid, clothing is purposely not at the top of the list. Yet, it still arrives by the semi-truck load, and they too need to sell it. And it makes perfect sense. Nonprofits need multiple revenue streams to survive and to conduct their individual missions. Fundraising requires a constant and multi-level effort – ranging from expensive direct mail campaigns to bake sales. By selling donated clothing, organizations can raise much needed cash to fund programs, pay expenses, house their operations, and much more.

No Free Lunch
And it’s not just clothing, nonprofits are collecting all sorts of donated items – cell phones, ink cartridges, and electronics – for their cash value. It takes cash – lots of it – to fund a national charity collection effort. When a garment is given free to a charity, it doesn’t mean it’s free for the charity to collect it. For those with large collection programs, this may mean buying and maintaining thousands of collection bins or operating storefronts, paying drivers, leasing trucks, hiring sorters and packers, buying mechanical balers, paying freight and transportation, etc. It’s no wonder then, that a nationwide charity may spend $10 million to make $16 million and put the net proceeds toward its mission. The adage, “It takes money to make money” applies to charities just as it does for profit-driven firms. The cost of doing business is similar as well. Essentially many of the costs to run a large for-profit business also are required of a large nonprofit. (Except that nonprofits have to do it on a shoestring budget, otherwise they get criticized for too much overhead, but that’s another story.)

Vocational School in Namibia:
The training combines theoretical and practical elements, including school subjects and general knowledge. The skills training takes centre stage, and a fruitful exchange between studies in the classroom and practical exercises in the workshops or in the fields is fundamental. Periods of attachment in neighbouring commercial companies, farms or institutions are a valuable part of the program, where the reality of working life blends with what the students have learnt at the school. After completion, the students enter into their productive lives, supported by the school during the start-up phase.
Humana People to People

Clothes collection
The banks are maintained by our own collection drivers, each one taking care of approximately 125-150 containers. Our drivers are trained to take good care of the donations, and to keep the area around the clothing bank clean and tidy.
All donations are important to us. We ask that the clothing be put into sealed bags which, not only protects the clothes, but also assists the drivers with collection. We provide a 24 hour call-out service, and will endeavour to service any banks which are reported as either full or damaged within 24 hours. We want to give our 'site hosts' and the public the best service possible.

Through your everyday actions you demonstrate to those around you why you value our collective habitat, and insist on an environmentally healthier way of life. Take the opportunity on Nov. 15 to invite a neighbor, friend, co-worker, or maybe your favorite barista to share your passion. In 2011, recycling opportunities have expanded many times over since America Recycles Day kicked off in 1997 – coincidentally the same year Planet Aid started its clothing and shoe recycling operations. Today most household items and consumer goods are easy and convenient to recycle. Go ahead and expand your recycling routine – every room in your home likely contains several items that can be recycled instead of being tossed in the trash. Whether you choose to recycle old cell phones, CDs, eyeglasses, or old clothing – it’s the conscious act of recycling that counts. Stringing together several “acts” soon becomes a habit, and thereafter, an environmentally healthy routine. Remember when you contribute clothing to Planet Aid, you double the impact of your conscious act.You save used clothing and shoes from entering a landfill and you help fund an aid program for those less fortunate in the U.S. and abroad.

As donations increase so do the number of organizations that collect clothing, shoes, and other textile-based items. New collection bins, each touting a different charity orcause, continue to appear. Neighborhood clothing drives take place every weekend and many schools now encourage students to donate out-grown shoes as part of their “green” campaigns. Yet, even when combining the efforts of all non-profits, businesses, recycling centers, thrift stores, and church groups, only 15 percent of textiles are recycled. The remaining 85 percent is still thrown away. That’s about 60 pounds of textile waste per person.
Humana Movement

World AIDS Day
Yet AIDS remains a formidable concern in the U.S. and abroad for several reasons. Lack of education, continued stigmatization and discrimination, and budgetary constraints, each have contributed to the ongoing spread of the disease. Others contend that declining interest by the general public and news media have also played a major role.
Americans tend to view the issue as an “African” or “overseas” problem rather than a domestic issue. But the disease has had serious consequences in the U.S. Of all industrialized countries, the U.S. has the largest number of people living with HIV – one million. Of those, 200,000 are unaware of their infection, meaning the risk of transmission remains high. Despite the availability of “rapid tests” which often provide results in 24 hours or less, a full third of those going to public testing sites, do not return to obtain their results.

Since the onset of the epidemic, more than a 600,000 people have died of AIDS in the U.S. – equivalent to the entire population of Las Vegas. In 2009 alone, 17,000 people died of the disease.
Around the world, AIDS has been even more devastating – claiming the lives of more than 30 million men, women, and children. Nearly two-thirds of the world’s AIDS patients live in sub-Saharan Africa, where many live in poverty and with limited access to healthcare. Two decades after scientists first thought an AIDS vaccine was in reach, the anti-dote remains elusive and the epidemic continues.

Clothes collection
The most important way of raising our own funds is through the trade in second hand clothes. Over 1,200 collection banks are placed throughout the UK to collect used clothes and shoes. The most recent addition to our collection efforts are mini community banks, smaller containers that require less space and thus can be placed on alternative locations other than the traditional areas close to supermarkets.
Humana People to People

HPP’s philosophy and approach
As the name implies, the concept of providing assistance from people to people is integral to HPP’s philosophy and approach. Together, HPP’s members stand in solidarity with the poor and work with them hand in hand and shoulder to shoulder in the struggle to rise from poverty.
Humana People to People and its members are dedicated to empowering individuals and communities around the globe, creating momentum toward lasting development and change. They have demonstrated time and time again the advancements that are possible with tailored interventions that help mobilize the poor to action.

RWM at NEC working rope pump
We also had on display a working rope pump which proved very popular with many of the visitors to the exhibition. In a country where we are used to simply turning on the tap to get clean water, the rope pump epitomises the struggle that people in deprived areas have on a daily basis. However, in many cases this is the only way for those people to gain access to water, and the great benefit of the rope pump design is that it can be made locally, at little cost and from resources which are fairly readily available.

Volunteer in Africa
If you are interested in giving your time by volunteering to work in Africa supporting development aid projects you should contact our partner The College for International Co-operation and Development (CICD) in Hull.
CICD educates volunteers to work in Humana People to People’s projects in Africa and India. The college offers the students a two year program. For the first 6 months they learn about the country that they are going to and the work that they are going to carry out either in Africa or India. Big questions like climate change and the great divide between the rich and poor are also on the agenda. For the next 3 months the students are fundraising, working, saving and preparing for a 3 month journey to their project in the developing world. The project work will last for 6 months and thereafter the students will study and carry out promotional work for 6 months to pass on their knowledge to the public.
Humana planet aid

Planet Aid UK would help out
We met with the carers in the rural communities close to the Hope Centre, and heard about their daily struggle to help the sick and the orphaned. They were a group of strong, warm-hearted women who take care of the orphans and the aids victims in their villages as volunteers.
On the last day of our visit we also learnt about the tree-planting action in Zimbabwe and we decided that Planet Aid UK would help out by raisingsome extra funds.

Natural resources are never “on sale”
Here are a few facts to keep in mind: it takes 250 gallons of water to grow cotton for one shirt. Although conventionally grown cotton occupies only about 3 percent of the available farmland globally, it demands an enormous quantity of chemicals to produce — about 20 percent of all poisonous pesticides and 22 percent of toxic herbicides currently used on the planet go to cotton production.
Obviously, making something as simple as a T-shirt requires considerable natural resources, fuel, machinery, time, and manpower. Yet because we live in a culture of “disposable fashion,” we often don’t think twice about throwing away an unwanted shirt. We simply get rid of it because it’s out of style, no longer fits, or we just got tired of it. But by recycling we can give old clothes a new life, and become active protectors of the environment as well.

Today, Planet Aid is a highly efficient nonprofit business, recycling millions of pounds of used clothing nationwide every year. Throughout its growth, the organization has remained true to its nonprofit ideals, donating the surplus funds it generates by selling used clothing to support sustainable development around the globe. The donations have gone a long way toward helping the poor find and grasp opportunities that lead to lasting improvements and a better quality of life. Planet Aid–supported projects have focused on strengthening primary education, enhancing smallholder farmer production, increasing HIV awareness and treatment, improving rural infrastructure and sanitation, as well as providing food aid to the hungry.
Planet Aid is a longstanding member of the international development organization Humana People to People (HPP). HPP is a federation comprised of 32 national member organizations working in 43 countries.
Humana UFF

In connection with a conference at Humana People to People’s Headquarters in Zimbabwe, Birgit Soe had the chance to visit the Frontline Institute and DAPP Zimbabwe’s Hope Project in Bindura.
The Frontline Institute is the Management training centre for Humana People to People which offers the students basic and advanced management courses.

The simple act of donating
Last year alone, Planet Aid provided $12 million in funding or in-kind gifts (from the sale of used clothes and grant support) to international aid programs in 15 countries. Since Planet Aid started in 1997, it has contributed over $70 million to projects on three continents.
This happened because people like you decided to donate your used clothing rather than throw it away. One simple act results in multiple benefits for many all over the world. Be an active recycler and frequent clothes donor. Be a champion of the “win-win-win” global recycling model.

It’s a Big Job and We All Have to Do It
When Planet Aid and other charities sell the donated clothes they collect, they receive only a few hundred dollars per ton. In short, it takes a lot of used clothing to raise just a little money. However, there is no shortage of used garments in the U.S. Several billion pounds of unwanted textiles are produced annually, but only 15 percent of this vast quantity is recycled. Much more effort is needed to save more textiles from unnecessary disposal. Clearly, we must work harder to make it easier to recycle.
Humana HPP

Earthly benefits
By donating a shirt, you remove it from going straight to what is known as the “solid waste stream.” This is the universal dumping ground for items we don’t recycle. Our solid waste usually winds up in one of two places. It gets buried in a landfill, which can contaminate soil and groundwater, consume valuable land, and emit some horrific odors.
Alternatively, your old clothes are torched in a huge incinerator that gives off microscopic particles that we breathe, and spews out clouds of greenhouse gases that heat and clog the atmosphere.

“Reincarnating” Your Clothing onTriple Play
Neither option is good for us or our planet. By recycling, two good things happen. We eliminate the need to produce a new item, and we remove an item from going to the solid waste stream. Win # 1 is thus all about protecting the environment and reducing the wear and tear on Mother Earth.

Clothes = jobs = income
Planet Aid, like all other clothes collection charities, sells the used clothing it collects. That is simply how it’s done. Moreover, only a fraction, about 20 percent, of all donated clothing in the U.S. is actually sold in thrift stores. The rest is sold to wholesale recyclers. The recyclers either grade and sort the clothes first, or ship them “as is” overseas. Along the way, lower grade clothes are made into other materials at processing plants that employ thousands around the world. The best garments may wind up in high-end boutiques or vintage shops. Used clothing shipments are routed all over the globe, but mainly to lesser-developed countries.
Humana HPPI

Protection of forests
Protection of forests is a huge challenge in Zimbabwe’s rural areas where the survival of the basically agro-based livelihood is highly linked to the environment with trees being central to the rural life. Firewood for cooking, timber for house construction, clearance of new fields on arable land and the curing of tobacco form the major threats associated with tree conservation in Shamva District.

Used clothes – the engine behind humanitarian aid
For non-profit organizations, the collection and sales of clothes is equally beneficial. Recycling provides needed cash to fund humanitarian projects. Planet Aid is among the nation’s largest charitable clothing recyclers. In 2010, Planet Aid alone collected nearly 100 million pounds of unwanted clothing – the equivalent weight of 254 Boeing jumbo jets. Since 1997, this and other funding has allowed Planet Aid to provide $70 million in direct or in-kind support to programs addressing health, education, job training, disease-prevention, farming, and child aid on three continents.

Activating a powerful synergy
And to think it all starts with a simple donation of a kid’s shirt or a pair of too tight designer jeans. It is this small act repeated by many across the nation that sets in motion a synergistic ripple effect, creating multiple benefits for people and the planet.

Planet Aid UK
Planet Aid UK donated £10,000 pounds to the action, which covered the establishment of the tree nursery, procurement of the plastic sachets, seedlings, logistics and other costs associated with the tree planting. Humana People to People extends its gratitude to the people of the United Kingdom for their contributions to a better environment, in England where second hand clothes are donated and in Zimbabwe where the 25,000 trees were planted.
Humana ADPP

Used clothes and shoes also serve as a global source of jobs and income for one-person shops, small businesses, and international firms that employ many more.

tree planting action
As a response to deforestation, Humana People to People planted 25,000 eucalyptus and moringa trees in more than 100 villages in Zimbabwe between Christmas and the New Year 2011.
The idea of the tree planting action was to build awareness in the local communities of Shamva district on environmental conservation, global warming and encourage people to think globally and act locally. Humana People to People used the festive season to plant trees with the local community in their villages.

Hungry for Used Clothes
After collection, clothes may be sold to a grading company to be sorted by material, type, and quality, ranging from “cream of the crop” garments for a high-end vintage shop, to “low-grade” T-shirts that are shredded and remade into polishing cloths. In between are multiple categories –—“tropical mix” wearables for warm climates, or items like belts and caps. Only better items or “shop quality” garments are hung in one of 12,000 thrift stores across the U.S.
Amazingly only 20 percent of all donated clothes are sold in thrift stores or secondhand shops. The bulk of all donations are eventually exported to overseas markets where demand is high. Twenty percent may be remanufactured into industrial wiping cloths, another 25 percent may be converted back to raw fiber for reuse as insulation or paper products. In the U.S. alone, nearly 3,000 recyclers handle the surplus of textile goods.
Humana DAPP

Food for all program of Humana People to People
Humana People to People started the program from Community to commercial farmers back in 1998, and by building on the experiences of that program that was implemented in Zimbabwe in 1998-2000 Humana People to People started to organise farmers in Farmers Clubs. Today, the 35 Humana organisations work to increase food security in all of the countries in which we work: Angola, Belize, Brazil, China, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ecuador, Guinea-Bissau, India, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. There are areas in these countries that are some of the most affected by poverty and hunger in the world.

Food for all project from Humana
These projects are just some of the examples that highlight Humana’s efforts in the fight for food security. While the world has a challenging, uphill battle ahead if we are to meet Millennium Development Goal Number 1, education, training, and empowerment in some of the world’s hungriest areas has demonstrated that food for all is possible. We can and we must persevere until it is a reality; in today’s world, no-one should go through another day hungry."

Development That Puts Children First of VAGs Tailor Project
The VAGs tailor project activities to meet the needs of the communities. For example, the Child Aid project in the Equateur province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo involved 65 villages in 2010 that focused on reducing the rate of hygiene and water-related infections and deaths. The project succeeded in establishing many new potable water supplies and community hand-washing facilities. In Milagro, Ecuador, 800 Child Aid families focused on improving nutrition and established household vegetable gardens. In Toledo, Belize, Child Aid mobilized local youth to engage in community clean-up campaigns and HIV/AIDS awareness.
Planet Aid Drop Boxes
